Dr Bonning received the award for “Services to Medicine, and People and Wellbeing.”

The person who nominated Dr Bonning acknowledged the following about him:

  • his extensive service to the Waikato Hospital Emergency Department (he was appointed a medical officer in December 2002 and a consultant in 2004. He became clinical director in 2010)
  • someone who very much gets involved on the ground floor with his staff in ED
  • an extremely strong advocate for having the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers over 20 changed (which is happening and comes into affect December 1st)
  • strong advocate for having the way blood alcohol samples are tested changed which is also coming into affect (that the current way of sampling has been the same since the 1960’s)

Mayor Hardaker said: “It’s absolutely vital we acknowledge the work these people have done, and thank them for their tireless efforts for, and on behalf of our wonderful city.”
