Oliver George Merola was born at 12.10am, 1 January 2014 at Waikato Hospital weighing 2470 grams.

He is the first child of Joe and Sian Merola, originally from Wales but now happily residing in Hamilton, New Zealand working as doctors.

Oliver is Waikato’s first baby of the New Year and possibly the first in New Zealand. He was born five weeks early and is under the care of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit team.

Sian went into labour at about 6pm on New Year’s Eve and saw the fireworks go off at midnight over Hamilton Lake at about the same time the midwife told her to start pushing.

The couple moved from Cardiff to New Zealand about three and a half years ago to work in Waikato Hospital’s Emergency Department. In the last year, Joe has worked as a registrar in Neurosurgery while Sian has been a GP in Auckland.

“I was quite glad he was born in 2014 – at least that was the year he was due,” said Sian.

The couple’s family had a double celebration back in Wales – not only were they wetting the baby’s head but also celebrating seeing in 2014.
