Kids in Waikato Hospital ED benefit from generous donation

Seriously ill and injured kids will be kept entertained while waiting at Waikato Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) thanks to a generous donation from Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.

Waikato DHB has purchased a giant connect four, a table and chairs set, a slide, two bead tables and a set of four trucks and loaders for its children’s ED with left-over money from a donation of $144,774 given to Waikids at the end of 2012.

The bulk of the money donated to Waikids went towards sophisticated monitoring equipment, breast pumps for new mothers, and parent beds for those staying with children during surgery.

“With the leftover money we have been able to identify play equipment for ED that is robust and meets hospital infection control requirements. We have not had much in the way of children’s play equipment because unless it is robust, it can be easily broken or stolen,” associate charge nurse manager Simone Loveridge said.

“This play equipment will make waits for treatment more enjoyable for children and their families. Part of recovery from illness and injury is play therapy, so having play equipment will allow doctors and nurses to assess children at play.

“We’ve already had our first experience where one boy didn’t want to leave the waiting room – he was enjoying the toys too much,” she said.

Mrs Loveridge said it’s heartening to be on the receiving end of such generous community support.

“We are just so grateful for this contribution,” she said.

A range of events occurred last year in the name of Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal in the Waikato. Golf days, sausage sizzles, car washes, raffle tickets, quiz nights, calendars, and ‘donate a dollar drives’ saw the money roll in from generous community members.

Countdown area manager Karl Wareham praised Waikato for being the top fundraising area in the country at $50,000 ahead of the nearest area group; an effort that nurse manager Janet Bland said “helps Waikids tremendously”.

Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal raised more than $1.2 million in total across the country last year. The 2013 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal will start at the beginningof August.
